About the Reserve

South Africa's Crown Jewel of Conservation

Kruger National Park is one of Africa's largest game reserves, stretching roughly 350 km from north to south along South Africa's border with Mozambique. Established in 1898, it covers nearly two million hectares of classic African bushveld — a mosaic of open savanna, riverine forest, granite kopjes, and mopane woodland.

What makes Kruger exceptional for first-time safari goers is its infrastructure. An extensive tarred and gravel road network links a dozen rest camps, making it entirely accessible by standard sedan. You don't need a guide — though guided drives add a richer dimension. This is where most South Africans have their first safari, and it earns its legendary status every time.

The park is split between Limpopo in the north and Mpumalanga in the south. Each section has a distinct character: the south is greener and better for leopard; the north is drier and more remote, better for elephant and roan antelope.

What You'll See in Kruger

Kruger hosts all of the Big 5 in substantial numbers. Spotting all five on a single visit is genuinely realistic during the dry season (May–September), when animals congregate around waterholes.

When to Go to Kruger National Park

Kruger's clear best season is the dry winter months, May to September. Vegetation thins, animals congregate at waterholes, and malaria risk drops. The summer green season (November–March) offers lush landscapes, newborn animals, and migratory birds — but thicker bush makes sightings harder.

🌿 Beginner's Season Guide
  • May–Sep (Dry Season): Best for game viewing. Animals cluster at waterholes. Cooler temps (5–25°C). Lower malaria risk. Book camps 6–12 months in advance.
  • Oct–Nov (Shoulder Season): First rains arrive. Vegetation greens up. Still good game viewing as temperatures rise. Excellent for birdwatchers.
  • Dec–Mar (Green Season): Lush and beautiful. Migratory birds arrive. Baby animals everywhere. Thicker bush makes sightings harder and malaria risk is highest.
Access & Entry

Gates, Permits & Getting There

Kruger has nine main entrance gates. Which gate to use depends on your fly-in point and rest camp. All entry requires a SANParks conservation fee — book via sanparks.org well in advance, especially during school holidays and peak season.

🚗 First-Timer Entry Checklist
  • Book accommodation and permits on sanparks.org — walk-ins are possible but risky in peak season.
  • Gates open and close with sunrise/sunset. Arriving after close incurs a penalty fee — build in travel buffer time.
  • Speed limit is 50 km/h on tar, 40 km/h on gravel. It's enforced — and slow driving means more sightings.
  • A standard 2WD sedan handles all main roads comfortably. 4WD is only needed for wilderness trails.
  • SA residents pay a lower conservation fee — select the correct category when booking online.

Essential Tips Before Your Kruger Safari

Kruger is one of the most forgiving safari destinations in Africa for first-timers — but a little preparation makes the difference between a good trip and an extraordinary one.

✓ Expert Tips for First-Timers
  • Leave camp at gate-open time. The best sightings happen in the first 2 hours of daylight — animals are active, light is golden, roads are quiet.
  • Never leave your vehicle except in designated areas. This is strictly enforced and exists for your safety.
  • Look for "traffic jams." Other cars stopped on the roadside almost always mean a sighting — stop, be patient, and you'll usually see it too.
  • Download the SANParks app. Real-time sightings are shared by other visitors — a genuine game-changer for finding predators.
  • Bring binoculars. Even a basic pair transforms the experience. A distant smudge becomes a lion pride.
  • Malaria prevention. Consult a travel doctor before your trip. Doxycycline and Malarone are commonly prescribed. Long sleeves at dusk and repellent are essential.
  • Book at least one guided morning drive. Camp guides radio each other — the extra cost is almost always worth it for big predator sightings.
